Mediobanca's Research Department presents 2018 edition of 'Indices and Data'

229 companies listed on the MTA operated by Borsa Italiana at September 2018, 201 of which industrials, 23 banks and 5 insurances, for a total market capitalization of €518bn, making up 30% of Italian GDP. This is the target analysed by the Mediobanca Research Department in the 2018 edition of its survey entitled “Indices and data”.

This annual picture of the last ten years’ stock market trends in Italy compared to the leading international financial venues, reflects excellent performances by the companies listed on the STAR segment, with an annual average return of 10%. The industrial companies’ stocks also performed well, climbing from 60% to 71% of the total market capitalization of companies listed on the Borsa Italiana market. Banks and insurances suffered, by contrast, with their aggregate market capitalization falling from 30% to 21%.

In the past ten years, in general, the Italian stock market has seen its share of the aggregate European market capitalization decline from 6.4% to 3.9%, ranking nineteenth among international financial markets.
