Mediobanca appoints António Horta-Osório as Senior Advisor

Mediobanca has today announced the appointment of António Horta-Osório as Senior Advisor, with effect from 1 August 2022. He will support the implementation of Mediobanca’s strategy, working in particular with the Co-Heads of Corporate & Investment Banking, Francisco Bachiller and Giuseppe Baldelli, on expanding client relationships and deal activity across Europe.

With a career spanning over 30 years at the highest levels in the European financial sector, António Horta-Osório is a highly respected senior executive within the financial services industry.

António Horta-Osório started his career in banking in 1987 at Citigroup in Portugal, then moved to Goldman Sachs, where worked from 1991 to 1993, in New York and London. In 1993 he joined Grupo Santander, where he fulfilled a number of roles, including: Chief Executive Officer of Banco Santander de Negócios Portugal until 1996, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of Banco Santander Brazil from 1997 to 2000, Chief Executive Officer of Banco Santander Totta (Portugal) from 2000 to 2006, Executive Vice President of Banco Santander in Spain from 2000 to 2010, and Chief Executive Officer of Santander UK/Abbey from 2006 to 2010. From 2011 to 2021 he was Group Chief Executive of Lloyds Banking Group. In April 2021 António Horta-Osório was appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors of Credit Suisse Group, where he remained in service until January 2022. He was knighted in the 2021 Birthday Honours for services to financial services and voluntary services to mental healthcare and culture.
